The Yellow River basin is an important ecological barrier in China. Exploring the spatiotemporal evolution and driving factors of eco-environmental quality is important for decision making on ecological management and high-quality development in the basin. In this study, we evaluated the quality of the ecological environment in the Yellow River basin from 2000 to 2022 using the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI), a comprehensive metric calculated from the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), wetland extent trends (WET), land surface temperature (LST) and the normalized difference bareness index (NDBI). Data sources for the study include moderate resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS) data and natural environment data (temperature, TEM; precipitation, PRE; soil moisture, SOI; solar net radiation, SNR; slope and elevation, DEM; wind speed, WS). Sen’s trend analysis method and the Mann-Kendall test were used to characterize the spatial evolution of RSEI. Then, the quantile regression model and residual analysis were applied to quantify the effects of factors influencing the RSEI and ascertain the relative contributions of human activities and natural factors. Results were as follows: Eco-environmental quality improved during the 20 year study period, and the average annual RSEI in the Yellow River basin was 0.465 for 2000-2022, with an average annual increase of 0.55%. The largest RSEI increase was in the middle reaches of the Yellow River basin, but the RSEI improved in 74.94% of the Yellow River basin area, and significantly improved in central Inner Mongolia and northern Shanxi and Shaanxi. The seven environmental factors all had positive effects on the RSEI, with the most significant impacts by PRE and DEM. There were also significant differences in the impact of the same factors on the RSEI of different quantiles. As the RSEI quantile increases, the relative influences of temperature, precipitation and elevation trended downward. The impact of natural environmental factors and human activities, as well as their combined effect on RSEI were quantified, and their respective contributions were 15.38%, 20.62% and 64.00% of the area with positive RSEI changes in the Yellow River basin. Our results provide data for scientifically based decision-making to support sustainable development and harmony between humans and their land in the Yellow River basin. |
